Who we Support
Many families in Kenya, especially those from marginalized and vulnerable backgrounds, do not have the opportunity to explore and experience the diversity and beauty of their country and beyond. They do not prioritize travel and believe that traveling is solely for the wealthy and a waste of money, or they are so destitute that the only thing on their mind is how to obtain the next meal on their table. It is not a culture that Kenyans embrace, particularly in rural and impoverished areas. Most people are born in a village, go to school in the same village, marry in the same village, and die in the same village, never leaving their county seat, and the cycle continues for their children. This translates to low exposure and awareness of different environments, culture, and career opportunities beyond their “bubble/world” hence affecting their aspirations, self-confidence, skills and motivation.
Beyond My Home is a program that aims to address this gap by providing opportunities for marginalized children in Kenya to visit different places and learn from different cultures, environments, and experiences. The exposure will increase love for education; break the cycle of poverty and traditional barriers such as early marriages, female genital mutilation and teenage pregnancy. The program is based on the theory that travel can broaden the horizons, enhance skills, and inspire dreams and children are no exception. The program will target 100 marginalized children a year from different counties in Kenya.
The program will use the following criteria to select the children:
• They are between 10 and 15 year olds
• They are from marginalized and vulnerable backgrounds, such as poverty, conflict, disability, or displacement
• They have never traveled outside their county
• They have good academic performance and discipline
The program will ensure gender balance and representation of different ethnic and religious groups
The program is aligned with the national and global development goals and frameworks, such as the Kenya Vision 2030, the Kenya Education Sector Support Program, the Global Partnership for Education, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The program will contribute to the achievement of these goals and frameworks by improving the access, quality, and equity of education for marginalized children in Kenya.
About Our Team
Samuel Gathenge
Samuel holds a degree in Recreation and Sports Management, coupled with a Master of Business Administration. He specializes in team dynamics and leadership development, leveraging a decade of experience in capacity building. His comprehensive knowledge extends to strategic planning and effective management of leadership and mentorship programs through outdoor education. Samuel's dedication to fostering growth aligns seamlessly with his diverse background. He has a wealth of experience in the areas of outdoor education and community development initiatives.
Margaret Irungu
Margaret is also a Leisure and Recreation Management Bachelors Degree holder with Masters in Project Planning and Management. She has a vast experience that culminates with her aptitude for Leadership, Management and Administration. She has worked under the Kenyan Government where she has been at the forefront of coordinating Programs including adherence to 100 % transition. This is a Government program aimed at Ensuring access to Education by all children on the Kenyan soil. On her free time she is a travel enthusiast with a knack for experiential learning. A passion she would wish to share with the Kenyan children.
Japheth Olumu
Japheth is a results-oriented Assistant County Commissioner with a M.A. in Public Administration and a B.A. in International Relations. He has a proven ability to coordinate government functions, manage administrative tasks, and ensure law and order. He is skilled in crisis management, disaster response, and conflict resolution. He is adept at interpreting and disseminating government policies, addressing public concerns, and fostering citizen participation. He is committed to promoting transparency, integrity, and ethical conduct. He is seeking to contribute his leadership skills and administrative expertise to a travel for exposure project that will drive positive change and community development.
Esther Njeru
Esther holds a degree in Leisure and Recreation Management, with a passion for travel and adventure. She has several years of experience in the tours and travel industry, where she handled travel logistics and planning, as well as travel operations. She also has experience in teaching, having worked as a teacher in marginalized areas in Kenya, where she inspired young minds to explore the world. Esther is a skilled team building facilitator, who uses her knowledge of leisure and recreation to create engaging and fun activities that enhance teamwork and communication. Esther’s enthusiasm for travel and learning aligns perfectly with her diverse background. She has a rich experience in the areas of travel and education, and community development initiatives.”
Peris Karuri
Peris is a graduate of Recreation and Sports Management, with a keen interest in adventure and sports. She has worked in the sports and adventure industry for several years, where she was responsible to move people through the wonder of sports. She also has a background in adventure leadership, having served as a leadership facilitator for many organizations in Kenya, where she encouraged young leaders to discover their leadership capacity through experiential learning. Peris is an adept sports facilitator, who applies her expertise in recreation and sports to design animation programs that foster teamwork and communication. Peris’s passion for travel and learning matches well with her varied experience. She has a wealth of knowledge in the fields of travel and education, and community development projects.
Annlily Wachira
Annlily is a resourceful librarian with a degree in Library & Information Science and a diploma in Information Studies. She has experience in cataloguing and organizing library collections, providing reference research, and operating library resources and databases. She also has skills in records management, data integrity, and customer service. She has worked in various sectors, including design, health, finance, and education. She is interested in travel for exposure projects, as she believes they offer opportunities for learning, networking, and personal growth. She will work as the administrator and record manager for the project.
